koordynator : Christiane Kübler

Lichtenbergschule comprises grades 5-13 and offers the German “Abitur” examination  which enables students to enroll at universities  worldwide. Our school focuses on sciences and languages offering a broad variety of courses and profiles. As MINT-EC school,we offer extra science classes from grade 5 on (“clubs”) besides the regular science subjects.  In the middle school years pupils can attend extra courses in all sciences in German and also as bilingual German/English classes.Lichtenbergschule uses diverse and innovative teaching methods (student-centered activities) to foster critical thinking and cooperative working. Our labs offer the possibility of learning with all senses and with many hands-on activities. Our “weird science club” prepares students for participation in national and international competitions such as “Schüler experimentieren” and “Jugend forscht”  and has  established a successful  network with local companies and the Technical University of Darmstadt. In the upper grades  10-12 Lichtenbergschule offers “Leistungskurse” (higher tier level) and Grundkurse (lower tier level)  in all science subjects including IT .Since the year 2000 Lichtenbergschule is an “Europaschool in the provence of Hesse” -a development of a state programme on the European dimension of education: to maintain this European dimension in the curriculum, to create multi-lateral school partnerships, to develop joint teaching and learning activities for the mutual benefit of parents, pupils and teachers. This includes a broad variety of languages that are taught and an associated “language center”.In 2004, a “bilingual branch” was established that comprises two classes of each year group from grade 7-9. 50% of the subjects are taught bilingually in  English and German.  In the higher classes, bilingual courses are offered in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Politics including the possibility of taking bilingual Abitur-examinations. Additional language certificates (Cambridge Certificate) and bilingual certificates (Certilingua) can be obtained. With the participation in the Comenius project we try to encourage our students to effective work and to develop social skills through genuine teamwork and to support the idea of “Europaschulen” in the sense of intercultural exchange.Furthermore it is intended to create a connection between the various subjects through interdisciplinary classes and problem-solving projects and to foster the use of modern technologies.

The institution is situated in a small town, being the only institution of general secondary education in the area, other ones being at a distance of at least 20 km. It is a theoretical institution, it does not have students with specific needs or cases of social exclusion, but there are sometimes cases of school abandon. It really needs some modernisation in the way of teaching and approaching students and their needs. The way students are taught won’t help them integrate very easily in a modern Europe and successfully meet all the requirements of the work market. That is why a multilateral project will help both students and teachers in this institution become aware of the importance of upgrading the teaching methods, the necessity of learning for personal development and for social cohesion to become active citizens. They have to be faced with methods based on learning by doing, using creativity and finding solutions to problems.
